BARNSTABLE — With an eye on the open District 1 seat on the Governor’s Council, Oliver Cipollini said he can bring experience of what works in the court system to the group.

A former first assistant clerk magistrate for Barnstable County and Plymouth’s juvenile corrections department, Cipollini said he knows what makes a good judge or clerk magistrate, two positions that are reviewed by the council.

“I’m the person with the education and experience in the courts and I have a good idea of what a good magistrate and judge can do,” Cipollini said in an announcement of candidacy Tuesday. “I have direct experience in the leadership roles of the court and that’s very important.”

It is Cipollini’s second time  running for a Governor’s Council seat, having lost to current councilor Carole Fiola in 2008. Fiola has announced she is not seeking re-election after holding the seat for 10 years. Cipollini is currently being challenged for the Democratic nomination by Walter Moniz, a New Bedford businessman and aide to former New Bedford Mayor Frederick J. Kalisz Jr. The District 1 seat includes 48 cities and towns in the counties of Barnstable, Nantucket, Dukes, Bristol and Plymouth.

A native of Fall River, Cipollini currently resides in Barnstable where he serves on that community’s Citizen Advisory Council for Wastewater Management. He is also a member of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Alumni Association Board of Directors. Cipollini has also worked as a systems network manager and as a social worker and counselor at St. Vincent’s Home in Fall River.

Cipollini said he will keep an eye on judicial nominations that come before the council.
“I will not just be a rubber stamp for everything that comes before the Governor’s Council,” he said. “I respect the Judicial Nominating Commission, but I want to use my own experience. I also plan to publish what I learn from the Governor’s Council and will really vet the candidates that come before us.”

He said his review of judicial nominations will include ensuring judges who are approved are not looking to use their positions to change laws.

Cipollini said he considers himself to be “very conservative in politics” and said he was looking forward to campaigning for the open seat.

“I think this election is going to be in my favor,” Cipollini said. “People on Cape Cod want to see me be successful and I’ve had a good reception throughout southeastern Massachusetts.”

Election 2010
by Michael C. Bailey
    Oliver P. Cipollini Jr.
is taking another shot for governor’s council.
The Marstons Mills Democrat
challenged incumbent and fellow
Dem Carole A. Fiola in 2008
in the primary, and though Mr.
Cipollini took the Cape with 44
percent of the vote (he took 13 out
of 15 towns), he fell short overall;
Ms. Fiola received 67 percent of
the vote throughout her district
and was unchallenged in the
general election.
Ms. Fiola recently announced
that she is not running for reelection
this year as governor’s
councilor of the first district.
     Mr. Cipollini is prepping
a new campaign website at
www.olivercipollini.com, and I’ll
let you know when that’s fully up
and running.
He joins a small but growing
field of candidates. Democrat
Walter Moniz of New Bedford
made his presence known last
week, and this week I received
an announcement from Democrat
Jeffrey T. Gregory of Fall
River, a retired police sergeant,
that he, too, would be running.

Grassroots Politics for Independent Massachusetts Voters
1st District

Oliver Cipollini
Carole A. Fiola, a ten term incumbent and wife of Kenneth Fiola Jr., executive vice president of the Fall River Office of Economic Development, has decided not to seek re-election.
There are two candidates for the office, Oliver Cipollini and Walter Moniz.
Cipollini ran against Fiola last term and lost 63% to 37%. He’s a retired clerk magistrate and a systems manager. Is web presence is pretty crude, but he did manage to get almost 40% of the vote. He will have name recognition coming in to the race.
Walter Moniz is a New Bedford businessman and aide to former New Bedford Mayor, Frederick J. Kalisz Jr. He’s pretty well integrated into the Azorean Portuguese community down in the Fall River area and has a lot of support from them. His campaign looks pretty slick.
Neither candidate has much campaign money – at $1000 each as of last month. Cipollini has more name recognition – so it’s going to be up to Moniz to make up the difference.

Oliver Cipollini, a former assistant clerk magistrate for the Barnstable and Plymouth juvenile court, will run again as a Democrat for the governor’s council seat that represents most of Southeastern Massachusetts.
Cipollini, a Marstons Mills resident and native of Fall River, ran unsuccessfully two years ago against Carole Fiola of Fall River, the incumbent councilor who is retiring. At that time, he defeated Fiola in Barnstable County, garnering almost 58 percent of the vote to her 42 percent.
“I feel that the citizens of the district have the right to participate in this process,” said Cipollini in a prepared statement. “When elected, I will be available for written and oral suggestions and thought-out arguments. I will do everything possible to encourage voter participation.”
The governor’s role confirms the appointments of governors to the state judiciary and, among other duties, approves commutations and pardons of prisoners.
Cipollini is being opposed in the Democratic primary by Walter Moniz, a Fairhaven businessman and the onetime neighborhoods liaison for former New Bedford Mayor Frederick Kalisz.

Cipollini to run for Governor's Council

March 25, 2010 12:00 AM
BARNSTABLE — Oliver P. Cipollini Jr., stressing his dedication to public service, announced he is a candidate for Governor's Councillor for District 1.

A native of Fall River, where he lived for about 36 years, Cipollini, a retired clerk-magistrate and systems network manager, has lived for the past 22 years in Barnstable with his wife Sandra Piccole.

In a press release, Cipollini said that in addition to working with large budgets and diverse systems, he has worked with children and young adults in the juvenile court system, as a social worker and as a counselor at St. Vincent's Home in Fall River.

A self-described "fiscally conservative Democrat," Cipollini stressed his dedication to public service.

The council deals with matters including criminal pardons and commutations and approval of gubernatorial appointments such as judges, notaries and justices of the peace.

In the Sept. 14 primary, he will be opposed by Walter Moniz of New Bedford. Incumbent Councilor Carole Fiola of Fall River is not seeking re-election.

"I seek to uphold the democratic process by becoming your representative on the Governor's Council," he said in his statement. "I promise to be your voice on the council.  I will welcome voter input in the issues which come before the Council."

As far as judges are concerned, Cipollini said, in part, "a judge should not tolerate any violations of his/her orders. Repeat offenders and recidivism should be dealt with strictly. Our judges need the respect and support of the community. Their overall social and family values should help them earn the respect of the public." Cipollini also said he believes in a review of all Governor's Council spending and, if elected, he said he "will do everything possible to encourage voter participation."

Cipollini seeking to succeed Fiola
For the second straight election, Oliver Cipollini Jr. of Marstons Mills is running for a seat on the Governor's Council. Cipollini, a retired clerk magistrate and a systems network manager, fell in the 2008 Democratic primary to Carole Fiola of Fall River, who is not seeking another term.

The council is charged with approving judicial appointments and pardons, authorizing expenditures from the treasury, and approving the appointment of constitutional officers if a vacancy occurs when the Legislature is not in session, among other duties.

"I enter this process as an advocate for the vitality of our state government's Constitution and governing process," Cipollini said in a written statement. "I feel that the citizens of the district have the right to participate in the process."

WELCOME TO THE NEW BLOG SITE FOR
Unification for Veterans of New England!!!!

“NO VETERAN SHOULD DIE BY DESIGN. NO DOCTOR SHOULD EVER HAVE THE POWER OVER LIFE AND DEATH. WE AS VETERANS HAVE EARNED THE RIGHT TO LIVE.”
President Theodore Roosevelt stated,
“Man good enough to shed his blood for his country, is good enough to receive a square deal afterwards.”

I don’t much care where you come from. We are all Americans! Some of us are Veterans and others are Disabled American Veterans. Being an American does not discriminate… it doesn’t care what your religion is or if you are black, white, or some other color…male or female…… Democrat, Republican or Independent. … Americans care for America! As Americans, we have a special feeling when we hear our Pledge of Allegiance, listen to our national anthem at the beginning of a ball game and see our American flag being raised or waiving majestically in the heavenly skies. We offer respect in America and respect in those who serve and those that fought for what this nation represents. We respect those that paid with the scars of freedom.
Patriotism has to go one step further…that step is the dignity of those that were disabled in service to their country….
This blog is entitled Unification 4 Veterans of New England. It came about after a along conversation one Saturday morning where I met Oliver Cipollini, in front of a Sandwich, Massachusetts post office while he was campaigning for the office of Governor’s Council for District One in Massachusetts. We thought a lot alike regarding equity in Veteran’s Services.
Remember: This not an ENDORSEMENT but a COMMITTMENT.

About this blog:
It is our hope to be able to use this site to spread the word, and hopefully get some positive results to the failure of the VA Health Care system and other medical entities causing issues for Veterans who deserve better health care that is owed to them.
